How to start a conversation with a stranger

Another request from E-one (thank you!) - asking how we should start talking to a stranger. One thing I know for sure is that when you first meet someone is to say...Macam mana kita nak mulakan perbualan dengan orang yang kita tidak kenal. Yang saya pasti ialah:

A:How are you?
B:I'm good. How about you?
A: I'm fine, thanks.
B: I'm Ali by the way.
A: I'm Ahmad.
and so on.

Most of the time this takes place at a wedding, party, public places, meeting new colleagues or people from different departments who you don't know and so forth. Selalunya perbualan kosong berlaku di majlis kahwin, kerayaan, tempat umum, kawan pejabat baru atau dari jabatan lain yang awak tidak kenal dan sebagainya.

Remember, the person who has taken the initiative to start the conversation also must know its direction. Do not touch on politics, religion and other personal questions. Ingat, orang yang mengambil inisiatif untuk memulakan perbualan juga mesti tahu arah perbualan tersebut. Jangan sentuh mengenai politik, agama dan soalan peribadi.

Here are topics you can talk on. Antara topik yang anda boleh bualkan:
Weather -cuaca
Food -makanan
Movies - cerita filem
Books -buku
Music - muzik
Hobbies - hobi
Sport - sukan
Fashion - fesyen

You also mentioned that your friend said it is impolite to ask someone where they are from. Personally, I don't think I will be offended if someone asked where I'm from (I'm from KL by the way, but I live in JB -see?:)). Just make sure that before you ask the question that the person you are asking is comfortable enough to share more detailed information with you about him or herself.

Tapi, mari tengok ayat yang exact you comment on "Where did you came from?" This is incorrect. Ini bunyinya macam awak tanya where did you come from? - awak baru datang dari mana? Kalau tanya macam ni memang foreigners rasa macam you busybody. Part ni jugak perlukan pemahaman grammar untuk susun ayat. Did dan came tak boleh digunakan dalam soalan yang sama.
Dari pemahaman saya, soalan yang E-One tanya ialah - awak asal dari mana?awak datang dari mana?
Jadi, kalau awak tanya soalan ni "Where did you came from?"  it should be:
Where are you from?
Where do you come from?
I'm sorry, can I ask if you are from Korea?
