Cara menggunakan a, an dan the

Topik ini saya pernah sentuh sebelum ini. Tapi saya dapati masih ramai yang tidak tahu bila hendak gunakan a,an dan the bila membuat ayat. Anda tahu bila ianya diletakkan pada sesuatu huruf seperti an apple, a cat, the house tetapi keliru bila buat ayat.

serviettes
A - diguna untuk menunjukkan sesuatu yang tidak tentu atau spesifik.  Ianya juga menunujukkan sesuatu singular (satu).
A car, a teacher, a mountain, a bicycle, a boy.
Contoh: Can I have a serviette please?
Ini kerana bila kita meminta a serviette takkan kita nak pilih, jadi kita akan minta yang mana-mana sahaja.

owl/burung hantu

An - juga digunakan untuk menunjukkan sesuatu yang tidak spesifik, sekiranya perkataan seterusnya adalah vowel. Ia juga menunjukkan sesuatu singular.
An apple, an elephant, an igloo, an owl, an umbrella.
Ianya juga digunakan untuk perkataan yang berbunyi seperti vowel, seperti hour. An hour (sejam) di mana h nya tidak disebut.

omelette/telur dadar
The - digunakan dihadapan sesuatu noun yang anda dan mereka yang bercakap dengan anda tahu apa yang dibincangkan. Ianya boleh menunjukkan singular ataupun plural. Contoh :
 Have you finished the report
Are you done with the omelette
I have sent the children to school.
The bags are in the cupboard.

Jadi di manakah nak letak a, an dan the ni? Letakkan mereka sebelum sesuatu noun. Adakala kita tidak mengguna a dihadapan noun, dimana jika noun tersebut adalah plural (berganda). Tetapi boleh dengan the.
Can I have some fruits please?
Where are the keys?
The keys are on the table.
The boys are waiting for a bus.

Vocabulary:
Ini bukan serviettes ya!
serviette = tisu kertas yang digunakan untuk lap jari/mulut, selalu lebih tebal dari tisu biasa.Ia bukan tisu kertas yang pakai kat kedai mamak tu ya. Ianya adalah jenis tebal dan bukan jenis 2 ply sahaja. Tapi ni kira standard serviette kat Malaysia lah kalau kita pergi sesetengah tempat makan.

vowel = huruf a,e, i, o, u
noun = kata benda >> api, lembu, garpu, telur, jalan

Please bring me the cheesecake when you come over.
Bawakan saya kek keju bila awak datang ke sini.

Take digunakan bila kita akan bertolak/bermula ke satu destinasi, titik permulaan dari suatu tempat.
Don't forget to take the keys before you leave.
Jangan lupa ambil kunci sebelum awak keluar.

Macam mana pula dengan ni:
Bring your umbrella incase it might rain> (dibawa dengan pergerakkan ke destinasi)
Take your umbrella incase it might rain> (bawa dari permulaan destinasi anda)

Sebab tu kita kata 'take away' atau 'take out' bila kita beli fast food yang ingin kita bawa pulang dan bukan bring away :)

Tenses lagi ! -bila nak letak -s dibelakang sesuatu perkataan (verb)

Ini antara tips penting dalam belajar English, senang tapi ramai buat kesilapan ni bila cakap dan menulis! saya selalu dengan orang kata I means (maksud saya) which is wrong! Tolong ya, lepas ni jangan kata I means....yang betul ialah I mean.

Untung siapa yang baca entry ni hari ni...ingat tip ni, insyaAllah (with God's willing) korang takkan buat silap lagi!

Kita buat review sikit:

Present tense digunakan untuk apa?
Present tense digunakan untuk memberitahu tentang sesuatu yg berlaku sekarang, sesuatu yang kita buat tiap2 hari, benda selalu betul dan benda yang benar.

I go to work at 8am.
I walk to the lrt station.
The sun rises in the east.

Dalam present tense, jika anda menggunakan subjek he/she/it anda mesti tambahkan S kepada verb.

Salah :He walk to the lrt station. (x)
Betul: He walks to the lrt station.

Cuba lihat ayat dibawah. Yang mana betul, yang mana salah? For those on my lessons, you can do this and send in to me anytime.

1. He love to go to Penang.
2. They take the bus everyday.
3. I eats at the cafe.
4. The cat meow everytime he is hungry.
5. Shah like to cook.
6. I hate washing the dishes.
7.We brings our books to school.
8.She cook rice for dinner.
9. Victor learns music in Sydney.
10. Your mother like cheese cake.
11. I drives to work.
12. You showers in the morning.
13. We takes our breakfast at the cafe around the corner.
14. The mamak makes delicious roti canai.
15. I feels sick everytime we go on that road.

Senangkan tip ni?Ingat tau! Pastikan -s anda ditempat yang betul!

A handicap we must overcome - The Star 13 March 2011

Please comment on this. I really wish to understand why these students do not want to learn English as a second language or as an additional language? English is widely spoken throughout the world, it's just a medium of communicating. Kenapa lah tak suka sangat belajar English ni?

The Star Online

On The Beat
Wong Chun Wai

There’s no two ways about it – universities have to give importance to English if they want to produce employable graduates.
IT’S preposterous, really. Most Malaysians must be horrified upon reading that some Universiti Malaya students are angry with the Higher Education Ministry’s call for universities to give importance to English to enhance their graduates’ employment prospects.
The call is timely and certainly appropriate but students at the Academy of Malay Studies (AMS) are regarding it as a move to sideline Bahasa Malaysia. The students have submitted a memorandum to the university’s vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Ghauth Jasmon, demanding an apology.
The controversy began when Dr Ghauth told a gathering of 2,000 students that the ministry wanted all public universities to improve their students’ skills in English to increase their graduate employability rate.
He delivered the message because the AMS students had the lowest graduate employability rate in comparison to all other faculties six months after they completed their studies.
He made the call based on statistics provided by the ministry out of concern. But rather than accept the fact, the students have instead demanded that Dr Ghauth state his stand on the national language. Some individuals have even left nasty comments on YouTube, calling him biadap (recalcitrant) and khianat (traitor) for delivering the message.
But the good professor is sticking to his guns: he is prepared to clarify the matter with the unhappy students but he will not apologise to them.
Good for him. The demand is unreasonable. In fact, the students should be appreciative of the call by the ministry as it tells them what most employers already know – that the standard of English among many of our graduates is so poor it has become an alarming situation.
Many employers have adopted a pessimistic approach, accepting the situation as beyond repair because many school leavers and graduates are unable to construct a decent sentence in English. Many have no grounding in English grammar and are unable to even tell the difference between present and past tenses.
It is not just school leavers and graduates who are in this situation, as poor command of English can also be detected among university lecturers and teachers through their conversations and written work.
In fact, one deputy minister’s English is so bad, his writing has been circulated on the Internet as an example to show how bad the situation is.
He purportedly wrote a review of a play in English and posted it on his blog. With cyberspace being the open domain that it is, his weakness, unfortunately, was widely exposed. The horrifying part is that his portfolio is related to education and it does not help that he is also known for his anti-English stand.
The pattern seems to be that those who are the most vocal against the use of English are generally weak in this language. In their attempts to cover their weakness, they try to project themselves as nationalists and defenders of the sacredness of the national language. Denial syndrome, one may say.
There are, of course, those who speak impeccable English and would gladly trade our iconic teh tarik for English afternoon tea and scones but they project themselves in a similar fashion in the most hypocritical way for political expediency.
Most of us are sure that the problem is not confined to graduates of AMS alone. I dare say the problem of poor command of English has affected all faculties in all public universities. And, let’s be frank, it’s in private universities too.
It would also be most unfair to say that the poor standard of English is confined to Malay students. It is a problem among Chinese and Indians too because of our education policy, which has clearly abandoned English.
Young Chinese seem to have become almost monolingual. Walk into a shopping mall and, if you are Chinese, you will be approached by salesmen speaking in Mandarin or Cantonese. When you reply in English, they will struggle to converse with you.
Dr Ghauth has taken the right approach. He could have gained popularity by playing the racial card and told the AMS students how great they are and that they would be future leaders of the country. But he would be leading them down a false path.
When they remain jobless, like the thousands who already are, they will conveniently blame the government. They will also blame the private sector, claiming that they are showing preference for certain sectors of applicants. They will hope to be employed by the public sector which is increasingly bloated.
Many of our graduates have never been motivated to become entrepreneurs. Rather, the aspiration is to become civil servants. This is one serious area of concern if we wish to compete effectively with other countries. But this is another story.
In China, they are putting emphasis on the teaching of English. The young are being taught to pronounce English words correctly, whether the American or English way.
In India, English is still given priority even as nationalists there are trying to push Hindi.
Malaysians with a poor command of English are entering universities. There they find that the academic books are in English but the medium of teaching is in Bahasa Malaysia.
Many struggle to understand what they read and to help themselves, some turn to similar books in Bahasa Indonesia, which they again struggle to comprehend. Most of the contents in the Internet are in English and are therefore of no help to these students.
In cases where students are required to take an English course because their command of the language is so pathetic, these students try to memorise essays, hoping that the same topics would be in their tests. That’s how low we have sunk in our standard of English.
Unfortunately, most of our politicians are not brave enough to grab the bull by the horns to tackle the problem. Many of them, of course, would have sent their children to schools overseas to ensure they have a strong grounding in English.

When to place an apostrophe...bila nak letak apostrof?

Pada lazimnya apostrof digunakan untuk menunjukkan hak milik atau percanggahan.

1. Apostrof ' digunakan utk menunjukkan possessive, kata ganti kepunyaan.
Maya's new shoes are beautiful.(singular - belongs to one person)
Ahmad's new car is fast.(singular - belongs to one person)

2. Apostrof selepas s digunakan untuk menunjuk hak milik plural.
Those are the riders' horses.
The ladies’ hats were blown away by the wind.

Sekiranya anda berhadapan dengan plural tanpa s, ‘ digunakan seperti singular.
The children’s playground was spick and span.

3. ' is also used in contradiction.
Do not = don’t
Would not = wouldn’t
Has not = hasn't
He hasn’t taste it.
Wouldn’t you love to go there?
Don’t talk loudly.

4. Its dan it’s
Possessive pronoun tidak perlu guna ‘s.
his,hers, its,theirs etc
The cat is licking its paw.
Its leg has been broken for years.

Gunakan’s apabila hendak memendekkan it is.
It’s a very tasty cake.
It’s a very hot day.

Vocab: contradict (ion) = percanggahan

Mana-mana kedai makanan segera atau ketika membuat tempahan online - Anda ada apa2 promosi hari ini?

4. Restaurants (I think kopitiam is still ok) - We like to place our order/ We are ready to order.

1. Hair salons are not the best place for you to practice your English
Salun gunting rambut
Salon= se-lon maksudnya sebuah ruang yang digunakan untuk perniagaan dsbgnya

Small talk/Bual kosong

What is small talk? Small talk ialah bual kosong. Bila kita bual kosong? Mungkin bila kita hadir perkahwinan dan kena duduk sebelah orang yang kita tak kenal...kita kena mula bercakap. Jadi apa pula yang nak dicakapkan?
Ada macam2 topik, tapi topik yang lebih baik jangan diusik adalah yang berunsur politik, agama, perkauman.Cara paling senang:
1.Smile, introduce yourself and shake hands.
2.When you feel that you have nothing to say or can not engage further in the conversation, this probably means that you are feeling negative about yourself. Don't. This will only hinder you from conversing.
3. Understanding the secret of a good conversation. Find the interest of the person you are talking to,listen and talk less.
4. Ask open ended questions. Avoid questions that has yes and no answers.

Body languages you should observe (signs)
1. Scratching nose when talking - a sign of lying
2.Biting nail -nervous or worried about something
3.Folding arm - feel threaten and being defensive, but not necessarily
4.Leaning forward -interested
5. Lean back - relaxed and confident

How much money do you have?

How much is used for non countable noun or singular object
How much digunakan untuk noun yang tidak boleh dikira atau satu bentuk yang tidak dapat dihitung banyaknya. Seperti air, minyak dan lain-lain.
How much milk is left?
How much was the book?
How much money do you have?

How many is used for countable noun or plural
How many digunakan untuk noun yang boleh dikira. Seperti sebuah kereta, dua buah kereta.
How many pairs of shoes do you have?
How many times have you eaten there?
How many children are in the playground?

Contohnya clothes (baju).

Clothes ialah gabungan berkataan dari bermacam-macam helaian pakaian seperti:
pants, shorts, t-shirts, shirts, skirts, blouse and so on.
Di sini clothes akan dikira sebagai uncountable noun. Jadi bila bertanya:
How much clothes did you buy?
Tetapi, kalau anda bertanya yang spesifik:
How many shirts did you buy?
